Greater Houston

Greater Houston, known as Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land by the United States Office of Management and Budget, is the fifth most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States and includes nine counties along the Gulf Coast in the southeastern Texas. With a population of 6,997,384 people according to 2018 estimates and more than 7 million in 2019, Greater Houston is the second most populous area in Texas after the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The approximately 26,000 square mile (26,000 km2) region is centered in Harris County, the third most populous county in the US, containing the city of Houston, the largest economic and cultural center in the South, with a population over 2.3 million. The Houston metropolitan area is part of the Texas Triangle megaregion, along with the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, the Austin metropolitan area, and the San Antonio metropolitan area. Greater Houston also serves as a major economic and anchor hub for the Gulf Coast. The Port of Houston is the second largest port in the United States, the 16th largest in the world, and leads the nation in terms of international trade.

The Houston metropolitan area has historically been one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States; it was the fastest growing in absolute terms during the 2013-2014 census year, with 156,371 people. The area grew by 25.2% between 1990 and 2000, with more than 950,000 inhabitants, while the country’s population grew by only 13.2% during the same period, and only from 2000 to 2007 by more than 910,000 people. The area would add between 4.1 and 8.3 million new residents between 2010 and 2050.

The Houston metropolitan area has the seventh highest gross domestic product in the United States, worth $ 490 billion in 2017. A major commercial center anchored by the Port of Houston, Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land has the value highest commercial export of any metropolitan area, with more than $ 120 billion in 2018, representing 42% of total Texas exports. Starting in 2020, Greater Houston will be home to 22 Fortune 500 companies, ranking fourth among all metropolitan statistical areas.
