Pierce County, Washington

County of Pierce is a county of the American state of Washington. According to the 2010 census, the population was 795,225, making it the second most populous county in Washington behind King County and the 61st most populous in the United States. The county seat and the largest city is Tacoma. Formed in Thurston County on December 22, 1852 by the Oregon Territory Legislature, it was named after the President of the United States, Franklin Pierce. Pierce County is located in the Seattle metropolitan area (formally the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Statistical Area, WA).

Pierce County is home to Mount Rainier, the highest mountain and volcano in the Cascade Range. The most recently recorded eruption was between 1820 and 1854. There is no immediate risk of an eruption, but geologists expect the volcano to erupt again. If this were to happen, parts of Pierce County and the Puyallup Valley would be at risk from lahars, lava, or pyroclastic flows. The Mount Rainier Volcano Lahar Warning System was established in 1998 to assist in the evacuation of the Puyallup River Valley in the event of an eruption.
