Phoenix Metropolitan Area

The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, also the Valley of the Sun, the Salt River Valley or the Phoenix Metro (known to most locals simply as ‘the Valley’), is a metropolitan area, centered around the city of Phoenix , which contains much of central Arizona. The United States Office of Management and Budget designates the area as the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and defines it as Maricopa and Pinal counties. According to the 2017 Census Bureau population estimates, Metro Phoenix had 4,737,270 residents, making it the 10th largest metropolitan area in the country in terms of population. The gross domestic product of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area was $ 242 billion in 2017, the 16th largest of any metropolitan area in the United States.

It is also one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas, with nearly 800,000 residents from 2010 to 2018 and nearly 1.6 million since 2000. The population of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area has increased by 45.3% between 1990 and 2000, in compared to the average UK. The states have a rate of 13.2%, making Arizona the second fastest growing state in the nation in the 1990s (the fastest was Nevada). The 2000 census reported that the population of the metropolitan area was 3,251,876.

As of the 2010 census, the two-county metropolitan area was reported to have a population of 4,192,887. Metro Phoenix grew by 941,011 people from April 2000 to April 2010, making it one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. This also contributed to the exceptional growth of the entire state, as the area is home to just over two-thirds of Arizona’s population.
