Charles County, Maryland
Charles County is a county in south central Maryland. At the 2010 census, the population was 146,551. The provincial capital is La Plata. The county is named after Charles Calvert (1637-1715), third Baron of Baltimore.
Charles County is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Southern Maryland region.
Southern Maryland (SOMD)
Popularly used southern Maryland consists of the southernmost counties in the state on the “west shore” of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. This region includes all of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary counties, and sometimes the southern parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. Although the southernmost counties in the state are actually on the Delmarva Peninsula, they are not included in most definitions of “southern Maryland.”
