Minneapolis–Saint Paul

Minneapolis-Saint Paul is a metropolitan area built around the Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix rivers in eastern central Minnesota. The area is commonly referred to as the Twin Cities for its two largest cities, Minneapolis, the most populous city in the state, and its eastern neighbor, Saint Paul, the state capital. It is an example of sister cities in the sense of geographical proximity. Minnesotans living outside of Minneapolis and Saint Paul often refer to the two together (or the seven-county metropolitan area together) simply as “the cities.”

There are several definitions of the region. Many refer to the “Twin Cities” as the seven-county region governed by the regional government agency and the Metropolitan Council planning organization. The Office of Management and Budget officially designates 16 counties as the “Minneapolis-St. Paul – Bloomington MN – WI Metropolitan Statistical Area,” the 16th largest in the United States. The entire region is known as “Minneapolis-St. Paul MN – WI Combined Statistical Area”, it has a population of 4,014,593, the 16th largest, according to 2018 census estimates.

Despite the nickname “Twins”, the cities are independent municipalities with defined boundaries. Minneapolis sits largely on the west side of the Mississippi River and is a bit more modern with a relatively young downtown and a trendy uptown. Located primarily on the east side of the river, Saint Paul has been likened to an east coast city, with quaint neighborhoods and a vast collection of well-preserved late Victorian architecture. The different urban cultures of cities led one observer to point out that “St. Paul is the last city in the East; Minneapolis the first city of the West. “

Minneapolis was influenced by its Scandinavian and Lutheran heritage, while Saint Paul was influenced by its French, Irish and German Catholic roots.
