Arlington County, Virginia
Arlington County is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia, often referred to simply as Arlington or Arlington, Virginia. The county is located in northern Virginia, on the southwest bank of the Potomac River, directly across from the District of Columbia, of which it was once a part. The county matches the location designated by the Arlington Census Bureau. Arlington is considered the second largest “major city” in the Washington metropolitan area.
In 2019, the county’s population was estimated at 236,842, making Arlington the sixth-largest county in Virginia in terms of population; if incorporated as a city, Arlington would be the fourth most populous city in the state. Covering an area of 67 km2 (26 square miles), Arlington is the geographically smallest autonomous county in the US, and due to state law governing population density, it has no incorporated cities within its boundaries. It is the fifth highest-income county in the US by median household income and is the eleventh most populous county in the United States.
Arlington is home to the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport, and Arlington National Cemetery. Academically, the county contains Marymount University, George Mason University Antonin Scalia School of Law, the administrative office buildings and graduate programs of the Schar School of Politics and Government and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School. for Peace and Conflict Resolution, as well as satellite campuses of the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. It will soon host Amazon HQ2, Amazon’s joint headquarters.
Northern Virginia (NOVA)
Northern Virginia, known locally as NOVA or NoVA, includes several independent counties and cities in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. It is a sprawling region that stretches west and south from Washington, D.C. With an estimated 3,159,639 residents in 2019 (37.02 percent of Virginia’s total population), it is the most populous region in Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area.
Communities in the region make up the Virginia portion of the Washington metropolitan area and the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Northern Virginia has significantly more jobs than Washington or the Maryland portion of its suburbs, and it is Virginia’s highest-income region, with some of the highest-income counties in the nation.
Northern Virginia’s transportation infrastructure includes major Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International airports, various lines of the Washington Metro subway system, the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail system, bus services, shared bikes, and lanes. and bike paths, and an extensive network of Motorways and Highways.
Notable features of the region include the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency, and the many companies that serve them and the US federal government. Area attractions include several Civil War and Colonial monuments and sites, such as Mount Vernon and Arlington National Cemetery.
